exit_signExit Signs
There are more than 100 million exit signs in use throughout the U.S. Typically lit by incandescent bulbs, these signs consume 30–35 billion kilowatt hours (kWh) hours of energy each year. If all U.S. companies switched to ENERGY STAR qualified exit signs, they would save $75 million in electricity costs.

Greenhouse Gas Emissions Calculators
These interactive calculators help estimate the greenhouse gas emissions of human activities, convert carbon emissions to equivalent units, and identify and compare emissions reduction options.

Greenhouse Gas Emissions & You
How much we emit . . .

In the United States, approximately 6.6 tons (almost 15,000 pounds carbon equivalent) of greenhouse gases are emitted per person every year.

How we create emissions . . .
82% of greenhouse gas emissions are from burning fossil fuels to generate electricity and power our cars. The remaining emissions are from methane from wastes in our landfills, raising livestock, natural gas pipelines, and coal, as well as from industrial chemicals and other sources.

Emissions from our home . . .
About 2,700 pounds of carbon per person per year (18% of total emissions) come from operating our homes, and most of that is from the energy used to power electrical appliances.

How we can help . . .
Individuals can directly affect the emissions of about 4,800 pounds of carbon equivalent, or nearly 32% of the total emissions per person, by the choices you make in three areas of your life. These areas are:

  • The electricity we use in our homes
  • The waste we produce
  • Personal transportation

It only takes 18 seconds to change a bulb . . .
